While I am loathe to have people compare themselves to others, I have often written about the fact that the phrase “I don’t have the time” is one of the worst excuses for not marketing your legal services or becoming a rainmaker.
Are you busier than the Chairman of an AMLAW 100 firm? Do you manage more than 800 Attorneys, a plethora of staff and gross revenue of over $550 million dollars? Are you busier than Stephen Poor?
Stephen Poor, Chairman of Seyfarth Shaw, LLP, blogs regularly on a blog entitled Ret
hink the Practice, and has joined twitter: @stephen_poor.
And while one of his reasons for doing so, which are revealed in a post he wrote on Bloomberg’s Big Law site, is to listen to what the legal buying public want and closing
“the value gap that has emerged . . . between the value the buyers of legal services perceive they are receiving and the value the sellers of legal services perceive they are delivering,”
the fact is that by posting on social media he is also becoming known to the legal buying public.
Remember, people do business with people they know, like and trust.
And by the way, some of the busiest people on the planet use social media – think Barack Obama @POTUS, Sir Richard Branson (@richardbranson), and other law firm chairmen like Mitch Zuklie (@MitchZuklie), Chairman of Orrick Herrington & Sutcliffe– and yes, they actually post themselves and don’t use ghost bloggers or social media managers tweeting on their behalf to do so.
Find the time. Make the time. Become known.
